Elmer Adler worked in his family's clothing firm in Rochester, N.Y. while developing an avocation as a book and print collector. Andre Girard, religious painter, was born in France and migrated to the United States after World War II. A leading figure in the French Underground in World War II, Girard initially drew caricatures of the Nazis but later turned to religious paintings, including subjects such as the life of Jesus Christ.
